Our vision is to see a greener more eco-friendly world for everyone that shares it.

Studies and market research into the cleaning and removal of bubble gum that is thrown onto streets, pavements and walk ways which affects most towns and cities around the world. Apart from the gum all over the pavements it also sticks to shoes and clothing and could be a health risk, but the volume of gum being discarded is certainly a growing problem.

Market research with councils, hospitals, schools, food chains, airports, shopping centers etc, show exactly what individual problems each one faces relating to the bubble gum problem in their area.

Biotransformations In Ionic Liquids Project is part funded by the DTI.

The main partners and participants are:- Enviroways Technologies, which is led by Paul Phillips. Paul has leading industry experience, bringing novel and pragmatic solutions to cleaning problems throughout a range of different environments and public areas. He has vast experience in the built environment with a range of clients from local councils to building companies.

The Quill Research Centre - based at The Queens University of Belfast, the team at QUILL are recognised as world leaders in the application of ionic. Prof. Kenneth Seddon, the world's foremost academic on the use of ionic liquids, leads the team.

This is a base definition and description of what ionic liquid is:- 'Ionic liquids, are quite simply, salts that are liquid at, or close to, room temperature and pressure. Because ionic liquids are salts, they cannot evaporate at room temperature and pressure and thus do not release volatile compounds which contribute to atmospheric pollution. In addition, by careful manipulation of their ionic components, they can be tailor-made to suit a variety of chemical applications.’

Manchester University, Dr Gill Stephens is leading the enzymology aspects of the project, finding enzymes to break down chewing gum and optimizing their activity in ionic liquids. She is also developing stable enzyme formulations, and studying the toxicity and biodegradability of the ionic liquids and the breakdown products from the gum. It will not be very long before this breakthrough technology, Ionic non-toxic gum cleaner is launched worldwide, this would certainly bring major benefits and enormous changes to how this age old problem is tackled.
